15th European Individual Women's Chess Championship

The 15th European Individual Women's Chess Championship begins today 5th through 18th of July 2014 at 'Hall Plovdiv' in hotel Novotel, Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The tourney is the first Chess event in the history under the patronage of UNESCO. The championship is an 11-round Swiss system with a time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. The event attracted 116 participants from 26 different countries including 8 GMs, 25 IMs, 29 WGMs, 2 FMs, 17 WIMs, 15 WFMs, 3 WCMs and other players. The prize fund for the event is 60,000 Euros, first place: 11,000 Euros, second place: 9,000 Euros and 3rd place: 7,000 Euros.

Magnus Carlsen is the World Blitz Chess Champion


Magnus Carlsen is the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Champion!

The FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships tourney which attracts 122 world chess players from 46 countries vying for the title has come to an end today in Dubai, the most populous city and emirate in the United Arab Emirates. The event took place on 16th-21st of June 2014 and the winner of the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship goes to Magnus Carlsen of Norway. Silver and bronze went to Italian Grandmasters Caruana Fabiano and Vishy Anand (India) respectively at the rapid event. Nepomniachtchi Ian (Russian) who has been consistent in the Blitz tourney finished the championship only a point behind Carlsen with 15 points while the America No.1 Hikaru Nakamura also came third with 15 points.

Rapid Chess Championship

The FIDE World Blitz and Rapid Chess Championship 2014 take place yesterday on 16th June, 2014 in Dubai, the most populous city and emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) featuring the strongest chess players in the world vying for the prize fund of $400,000. The events is Swiss-system tournaments. The Rapid Championship games consist of 15 rounds scheduled for 16th, 17th and 18th June. Each player will have 15 minutes + 10 seconds additional time per move, starting from move 1 while the Blitz championship follows with 21 rounds starting on 19th and 20th , each player will have 3 minutes + 2 seconds additional time per move, starting from move 1. The Top 10 players present at the event are the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Alexander Grischuk, Viswanathan Anand, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Sergey Karjakin and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Svidler Peter and Boris Gelfand.

Vugar Gashimov Memorial

The Vugar Gashimov Memorial Chess Tournament which took place on 20th April in Shamkir, Azerbaijan, in memory of GM Vugar Gashimov who died in the early hours of 11 January, 2014 at the age of 27 is expected to end on 30th of April, 2014. The tournament was divided into two groups:

Group A featured six participants: Magnus Carlsen (2881), Fabiano Caruana (2783), Sergey Karjakin (2772), Hikaru Nakamura (2772), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2760) and Teimour Radjabov (2713), while the Group B featured ten players: Étienne Bacrot, Wang Hao, Alexander Motylev, Pavel Eljanov, Radosław Wojtaszek, Abasov Nijat, Durarbeyli Vasif, Rauf Mamedov, Guseinov Gadir and Eltaj Safarli who are top five seeds from various countries (last five are from Azerbaijan).

Anand Takes On Carlsen Again

The crucial game of today was between Karjakin and Viswanathan Anand, the game ended in a draw after 91 moves. The five-time world champion Anand finally had his chance to play Magnus Carlsen in the world championship title later this year in November. The oldest player in the tournament Anand now leads with 8.0 points without a single loss in the tournament. Pre-tournament favourite, Levon Aronian lost against Dmitry Andreikin in round 13 game of Fide World Candidates Tournament 2014 today in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Vladimir Kramnik also outplayed his ark rival Veselin Topalov to move up on the cross table. Kramnik Vladimir Andreikin Dmitry, Mamedyarov Shakhriyar, Aronian Levon, Karjakin Sergey are all on 6.5 points. Svidler Peter with 6 points and is back at bottom of the cross table.

Viswanathan Anand played draw with Dmitry Andreikin in the twelfth round of the Fide World Candidates Tournament 2014 at Khanty-Mansisyk, Russia. With two games to go, Anand still maintains the lead with 7.5 points on the ranking lists. Aronian Levon also drew level with Vladimir Kramnik while playing white. Aronian still remains in second place with 6.5 points. Mamedyarov also drew with Karjakin, both with 6 points each on the cross table. Topalov Vaselin of Bulgaria was the only winner of today's game with victory over Svidler Peter of Russian after a superb move. Kramnik now stays at the bottom of the table with 5.5 point after a draw with Aronian.

Peter Svidler beat Vladimir Kramnik in round 10 of the Fide World Candidates Tournament to stay fifth on the cross table. The only win for today match. With four matches to go, Anand is still leading on the cross table with 6.5 points, after a draw with Mamedyarov. Anand has not lost a single game since the inception of the tournament. Karjakin, Mamedyarov and Svidler are on 5 points each, while Kramnik and Andreikin are on 4.5 points and Topalov is still at the bottom of the table with 4 points. All the four Russians that played today drew their matches.

He is leading with a full point and this maybe his chance to a rematch against the current World Champion, Magnus Carlsen for the World Chess Championship title.
